One main struggle James has in the book is his step father die. James father was a good man although he died at a young age. Unfortunately Jams mother got remarried to another man. But this man wasn't just any man, James looked up to him. James loved him like he was his own father, and he loved all 12 of his wives kids like they were his own. James's step father was always there for hime. Sadly one day James step father died of a stoke; this changed James life for ever.
After this James turned his whole life around. One thing James did was cut school every now and then. This caused him to fail many classes and head towards dropping out of school. But it didn't get any better, instead of going to school he went to the movies to hang out with his friends. Life kept getting worst James started shoplifting, robbing stores, and even doing drugs. Everything has gone wrong with James ever since his step father died.
Apart from James not having a father figure, in a way he doesn't have a mother figure either. James and his mom are complete opposites. His mother is neat proper and classy, which is the complete opposite of James. James is Loud rowdy and misbehaves at times. It almost seems like his mother is missing out on many things that are happening in life like James life. Although I could partially understand the stress the mom feels dealing with all of those kids by herself.
James life was messed up, he was sinking himself into a whole that would eventually close up. This behavior comes to show that James needed a father figure in life. I know for a fact that if James shad a father figure his life would be right side up. In the end James can relate to many boys who don't have a father in life to guide them through the troubles life has in store.
